Birth of Shrimad Rajchandraji
Shrimad Rajchandra was born on November 9, 1867 (Kartik Sud Purnima, Vikram Samvat 1924), in Vavania, a port near Morbi (Gujarat, India). His mother, Devbai, was Svetambara Sthanakvasi Jain and his father, Ravjibhai Mehta, and paternal grand father, Panchan Mehta, were Vaishnav Hindu. So he was inroduced to Jainism and Hinduism from early life. They were from Vaniya community and from Dasa Shrimali caste. He was initiated in Vaishnavism by a Sadhu named Ramadasji. He continued to study other Indian religions and was attracted to Ahimsa (non-violence) doctrine of Jainism. Later, he chose Jainism because he considered that it provides best path to salvation. His birth name was Lakshminandan. He was renamed Raichand by his parents when he was four years old. Later, his name changed to its Sanskrit form, Rajchandra. Shrimad, an honorific, was added by his disciples posthumously. His disciples also refer to him as Param Krupalu Dev (Lord of the Highest Compassion).

YJA Update
Lighting fireworks and sparklers result in harming one-sensed beings and insects. Larger animals are often frightened by the loud sounds made, and several toxic chemicals are released into the air, contributing to worsened air quality.

YJA invites you to take the pledge to focus on your ‘inner spark’ instead of setting fireworks this Diwali by filling out this form, open to all ages! Pledge-takers will be highlighted on our social media and in an article on Medium. As Jains, this is a small but impactful step we can take in leading non-violent lives.

If you have any questions, please direct them to education@yja.org. Thank you!
An Urgent Appeal for a Gyan Mandir; an Apoorva Avsar to Donate!
We need your help in a Very Unique opportunity to spread Jain Principles to mainstream Americans. Jain Academic Education in Universities and colleges in North America has made a significant progress in the last 10 years. We have planted seeds in over 25 Universities with Endowed and Non-Endowed positions like Chair, Professorship, Lectureship, Post-doctoral Fellowship, and others. Several Donors led by Drs. Meera and Jasvant Modi of LA has dedicated most of these positions to a Tirthankar. (We now have 17 of them).

Occasionally Universities have offered matching contributions towards endowments. While these matching grants have helped us a lot, they do pose challenges with time deadlines. Donors need to decide in a short period of time to avail of matching. In the past, we were fortunate to procure two such Endowments. University of California had offered such matching for Endowed Chairs at each of its 10 campuses. The Jain community was fortunate to receive two of these. University of California at Irvine and Davis required $ 2 Million for an Endowed Chair. Donors’ $ 1.5 Million was matched with $ 500,000 by UC President. This was great then and now we have even better opportunities at our door!
